Board Profiles

Patrick McCarty, Chair, is active in the Family Association and as a Grades parent. He works for Protective Life as a Marketing Specialist/Commission Coordinator.  He has extensive financial experience and is also the acting actuary.  His oldest daughter attends Alabama Waldorf School's Grades program, and his youngest will start the Nursery program in the Fall. He and his wife are expecting a third child soon! Patrick also enjoys acting and is often busy filming.

Tosha Gaines, MS, OTR/L, is a pediatric occupational therapist for Easter Seals. She is also a freelance photographer who specializes in photographing children with special needs. She received her B.S. in 2003 in health education/exercise physiology and her M.S. in occupational therapy in 2005, both from UAB. She has also completed her fifth year certification in special education. She is an active participant in the Birmingham non-profit community. She is a past member of the Birmingham Art Association and Mid-South Lupus Foundation. She is a currently serving on the board for Art in Avondale Park and actively works with Birmingham Artwalk as well.  In 2006, inspired by her brother’s diagnosis with lupus the previous year, she created the Lupus Support Network to help families locate needed resources. She is a strong believer that art and craft therapy can help children learn and express themselves.  In her free time, she enjoys playing the violin with her daughter, volunteering, and photography. She is an active volunteer at Alabama Waldorf School and has a daughter in the Grades program.

Gerhard Graf, MBA, originally hearkens from Germany, the birthplace of Waldorf education, and is the proud parent of an AWS Grades student. He is active with Das Haus / The German Club downtown, the Alabama Germany partnership, and UAB where he works full-time as IT Operations Manager.

Ally Leonard teaches Spanish at The Altamont School and is the Dean of Students for 7th and 8th Grade.  She has an alum daughter and son at Alabama Waldorf School. 

Joshua Parker, is a former AWS preschool parent who likes to stay active in the school through his Board work. He is an IT Project Manager at DST Health Solutions.

Byron Bart Slawsonpractices business, property and environmental law at the firm of Slawson, Esq. P.C.. He serves as Chairman of the Environmental Law Section of the Alabama Bar Association. He currently practices law in the areas of envrionmental law, solid waste regulation, water pollution and business law. He has worked to protect the environment in the Southeast for 27 years.  Mr. Slawson received an A.B. degree in Journalism and a Certificate in Envrionmental Affairs from Indiana University in 1980. He earned his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law in 1986. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of the East Lake United Methodist Church. Mr. Slawson and his wife, Georgia, have a daughter in the AWS Grades program.

Rob Spiegel, M.D., is a concierge physician and active Grades parent.  He brings much business expertise to his role on the board as Site Chair and as a Tuition Adjustment Commitee member.

Brian Mixon is a software developer for Alabama Power and long-time member and visionary of the AWS Family Association. His son attends the AWS Grades program where his wife is the Spanish teacher.

Elizabeth WestfallM.P.H., taught at Alabama Waldorf School (AWS) for several years and served as Faculty Chair.  She now works at UAB in Publich Health.  Her twin sons and a daughter attend AWS's Grades programs.
